About paid surveys, the companies that host them, and you. . .
How they work:
Companies want to research the preferences of their current and potential customers. That may be to make decisions about what to advertise, or even what new products would be profitable.
These companies hire agencies that have the expertise to create surveys and other ways of measuring customer opinions. And, the companies tell the agencies how much they are willing to pay for each completed survey or other activity (even activities like watching videos and playing games).
The agencies then advertise for consumers who are willing to do tasks like complete surveys or watch sponsored videos. The agency gets a percentage of the reward each completed activity. Keep in mind that agencies compete for the companies that need research, and for consumers willing to do surveys and so on.
Who can sign up?
Almost anyone can join – and not be charged any fee (do not join any agency that does charge a fee). However, you should be prepared to share some personal information that helps the agency determine which surveys make the most sense for you individually.
The number of invitations you get generally depends on what kind of a consumer you are. For example, if you are a mother with small children – and do lots of buying – you will usually get more and better surveys than a 65-year old man who does not shop very often.
Which agency is best?
That is difficult to know in advance. For example, if you are a 35-year old male interested in home audio and cars you might find one agency best, while a 40-year woman interested in home renovation might be best served by another agency. Remember, too, that agencies work with different companies, and those companies might change at any time.
That explains why successful survey-fillers belong to several agencies. Belonging to a few agencies brings more opportunities than belonging to just one. Join a few at first, and adjust as you get to know how many you can and want to handle.
Cash or Rewards?
That’s one of the big questions. Many agencies offer only “rewards”, which tend to be specific types of products or gift cards from major retailers. If you need cash to pay the bills, avoid agencies that only pay rewards. You will note some cash is paid through PayPal; if you are not familiar with it, it is a well-established and reputable online bank.
